This was important to ensure that CORSIA as a new mechanism for a new “Party” to the Paris Agreement stimulates new climate action, both within the aviation industry itself and in the project activities the airlines support. T&E has obtained the EU Commission's assessment of the UN’s aviation offsetting scheme (Corsia), which it received in September 2020 but has delayed publishing. The study (which can be downloaded here) finds major flaws in the scheme, calling into further question whether it can be in any way compatible with the EU Green Deal. In 2016, ICAO approved guidelines to implement the Global Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). In simple terms, CORSIA requires all aircraft operators to monitor their emissions on ALL international flights (Country A – Country B) beginning 1 January 2019.
