The consortium completed the four-wave PSED in 2003 and released the publicly available version of the dataset soon thereafter (Gartner, et al. 2004, xv). Work and previous self-employment experience is more important than formal education for the likelihood of being a nascent entrepreneur. Furthermore, social capital is an important stimulus for nascent entrepreneurs.

Nascent entrepreneurs are people who are engaged in creating new ventures. This chapter reviews the international evidence on how many of them are there around the world, what they are doing, who they are, what makes them different, and which ones see their vision through to eventual start-up. This paper employs data from the German Socioeconomic Panel (SOEP) and data from the German Social Insurance Statistics to study nascent entrepreneurship.

Nascent entrepreneurs are individuals actively trying, either alone or with others, to start a new business. The process of organization emergence involves four stages such as (i) start‐up intentions; (ii) gestation; (iii) infancy; and (iv) adolescence; and four transition points such as (i) conception; (ii) discontinuance; (iii) firm birth; and (iv) firm growth.
